Mike,

I am over in England and have just obtained my Intermediate Licence thanks, in great part, to your Podclass General Class series. I found the course really helpful. I would go out running in the evening and listen to you and John running over the topics. The overlap between the two courses is very high and any differences are always useful to know. I tried to download the Extra Class but I think it is all switched off in iTunes. Anyway other way to download them? Thanks

CHARTER = Can't Handle Another Retarded Technical ERror

Years ago i used to contract for charter, 2 things come into play. 1. MOST contractors have more of a clue than an in house tech. We have worked in house, had the training, built plants etc. Sad thing is.. alot of the people that know their way around a cable system have quit. The cable industry as well as the satellite industry would rather hire some joe shmuck off the streets driving some beat up station wagon blowing smoke for pennies on the dollar than hire someone with the experience. Since i have quit doing both. Got tired of all the political back washing that goes on behind closed doors.

John,

Yeah, I can understand the trouble they have with telling weather or not someone really knows whats going on or not. Charter cable internet has worked great here for the last 5 years as well. The trouble started when they were working on the lines out front. Anyway, it's working.. Lets see how long it lasts this time ;)

Glad you're reading some Ayn Rand. :)
lol@ him not knowing IE / mac stuff. :)
"signal is too high" can actually be a problem - signal becoming distorted.

You can actually view graphs of the SNR on the modem via SNMP or sometimes browsing to it. Funny that he used a splitter and not an attenuator.

We've got several sites charter recently "installed" and aren't working properly... it's been months. It's ... depressing. horribly.

My theory on the "upsell" during troubleshooting: If they can get you to get "Charter Phone" then you're that much less likely to (be able to) call and report your outages. It's a customer service cost reduction measure more than anything, and then if they can make money on it, all the better. ;)

Wish I had heard your show when Yang was on it!

Mike, I understand your frustration, but having been close to the other end, I do sympathize with Charter. When it comes to networking, the customer is almost always wrong. Frustrating for technical people with a clue, but there are plenty of space cadets who are convinced they know more than the tech, and the most clueless tend to be the most insistent that they know what the problem is. And Charter's automated thing does work a lot of the time, but again, with the space cadets you need to go through it three or four times before you they get it right.

Interesting that you have had so much trouble. I've had Charter since they bought Bresnan, probably five years ago or so? I've had perhaps two or three outages a year, usually resulting from storms, and rarely lasting for more than twenty minutes or so. I can only recall one time when a tech came to the house, and he did have a clue. A few minutes with a level meter convinced him that an outside cable needed to be replaced, but even that if I recall took less than a day.

Once Charter had something munged up in their database and I was offline for a few hours, probably would have been back quicker if I hadn't been so slow to call them. I was very surprised that something that I would have thought would be hard to figure out was sorted by the tech on the phone so quickly.

I wonder if Charter just doesn't have the customer base over there and can't come up with the resources, or if you have a local office that is clueless, or perhaps our local folks are more on the ball than most, or maybe I've just been lucky. But certainly your experience has been a lot different than mine.

I agree Joe, but with my podcasting and other things, I can really use the speed. I've been lucky in the fact that Charter has only gone out this one time in 5 years (or at least that I noticed). I'm giving them a few weeks here to make sure they stay up. If I don't have to talk to them, then I'm fine with it. If this becomes routine, then I will switch.

oh also. if you visit erlewein.com, the last time I updated was with the post "AT&T Fail" which is actually, amusingly, about the process of switching my DSL-only line to phone/DSL service combined.

It's solely about how AT&T handles internal accounting. The service is rock-solid. I just find it completely amusing how difficult it was for them to transfer a service from one account to another. Also how it was a literal circus to reinstate web access to my account post-transfer. Paperwork aside, the product is solid.

Charter has neither going for them. ;)

I ditched charter more than a year ago for internet. Averaged 3 outages per month of more than 20 minutes. Usually hours. I was hoping AT&T's DSL service was more stable.

It was. In the first year I had one outage, which lasted 3 hours -- the entire 3 hours that power was out after a transformer down the street blew (and I only know it was a DSL outage because I tried to get online using my laptop and the DSL router powered by a car battery. :)

The only other outage I had was when I added a phone line to my DSL subscription (which had been on a "dry loop" (no phone number) until then) was a planned outage as they needed to move the DSL connection from one account to another. It was administrative, and expected.

Until Charter learns to behave more like an enterprise-grade ISP, they don't even fall under the category of "ISP" in my book.

Sure, they've got speeds in excess of 40meg now. But what good does that do unless it's guaranteed rate, and has a better than 85% uptime (they currently don't...) ? Answer: none.

I'm WAY more happy with my 1.5meg that I know will ALWAYS WORK NO MATTER WHAT than 10-40meg of "well, it might work when you need it" service.

Also, I'm not selling internal organs to pay the bill anymore, either. added bonus! ;)

I ditched charter more than a year ago for internet. Averaged 3 outages per month of more than 20 minutes. Usually hours. I was hoping AT&T’s DSL service was more stable.

It was. In the first year I had one outage, which lasted 3 hours — the entire 3 hours that power was out after a transformer down the street blew (and I only know it was a DSL outage because I tried to get online using my laptop and the DSL router powered by a car battery.

The only other outage I had was when I added a phone line to my DSL subscription (which had been on a “dry loop” (no phone number) until then) was a planned outage as they needed to move the DSL connection from one account to another. It was administrative, and expected.

Until Charter learns to behave more like an enterprise-grade ISP, they don’t even fall under the category of “ISP” in my book.

Sure, they’ve got speeds in excess of 40meg now. But what good does that do unless it’s guaranteed rate, and has a better than 85% uptime (they currently don’t…) ? Answer: none.

I’m WAY more happy with my 1.5meg that I know will ALWAYS WORK NO MATTER WHAT than 10-40meg of “well, it might work when you need it” service.

Also, I’m not selling internal organs to pay the bill anymore, either. added bonus!

PRESS RELEASE
35th Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Service
RIVER ROUGE, MICHIGAN — A memorial service is planned for Wednesday November 10, 2010 to remember the 29 men who died when the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior on Nov. 10, 1975.

The ceremony is set for 6 to 8 p.m. near the Mariners Memorial Lighthouse at Belanger Park, off Belanger Park Drive and Marion.

The event is held in River Rouge because that’s the city where the vessel was built in 1957 and ’58.

Several speakers will give their memories of the ship, including people who helped construct it and relatives of some of the deceased crewmen.

Artifacts and photographs also will be on display.

At 7:10 p.m. — the time the ship sank — a wreath will be tossed into the Detroit River. A bell will be rung 29 times in memory of each person who died.

A plaque presentation and lantern lighting is planned. Refreshments will be provided at the end.

Event organizer Roscoe Clark has a Web site devoted to the vessel, which contains several video clips, photos and new information about the ship, at www.ssEdmundFitzgerald.com

Earlier in the day, an Edmund Fitzgerald open house will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. at the River Rouge Historical Museum, 10750 W. Jefferson Ave.

For more information on either event, visit the Web site or call Clark at 1-810-519-2148 or Dolores Swekel at 1-313-842-7822.

I have read alot about these bikes. I love them!!!!! I bought mine to clean and resale but after putting a few miles on it i cant part with it. My first bike was a VTX1800. I thought it was going to be hard to find another bike ( cruzer ) to compare in thrills of excelleration that i could afford in this time of economic disaster until i stumbled upon my 85 magna. Best 1500 I have ever spent. I wanted the v-max and almost bought one until the deal fell through but after riding this bike it would be and has always been a very close comparison. I have desecrated some of todays crotch rockets from stoplights on this bike and i usally get about 145 miles before my gas light comes on. However is does have a curb appell of a huffy with a flat tire that is rusted out but i enjoy the looks of what the h#ll is that??? The other is when you talk to some of the older bikers ( I'm 31 ) and they remember the old days and tell stories about all the bikes that they outran on it or being beat by it. I wish Honda would bring back the V4. With todays advanced fuel injection and engineering one could only imagine what it would be like.

Both the V max and the V 65 magna are incredible bikes. When I was in high school I had a V65 and never lost a race! I also took it to college and had a blast! I had a great time on that bike! I do recall that the V65 was the first production bike to break into the 10 second 1/4 mile. I believe it was about 10.8 seconds which at the time was a little faster than the V max. I now own a 2003 v max which I enjoy. I can get about 120 miles out of a tank of fuel which is not bad. Comparing the two, the power is very close but I think the v max edges out the V65. As far as the comfort V65 hands down! The pegs are too high on the V max! It's like a crotch rocket! By the way is there a kit to lower those pegs? As far as looks I think the V max takes it! Overall...well, I had the time of my life on that V65!!!!

I also own an 83 V-65. I am the original owner and the bike has 28,ooo miles on it. Been on a couple long road trips with it and absolutely love the bike. When I saw the Cycle World ad I had to have one, at the time I was riding a 650 Maxim which was also a great bike but nothing compared to the V-65 at the time. I also think I will keep it forever.

Dan, I need to correct you on one of the numbers. I had a 84' V65 Magna. The bike was tested in a bunch of the bike mags. and it would hit 0-60 in 3.2 seconds not 4.2. The bike is not that slow. I would bet that most people that ride one (unless they have raced bikes and weigh 160 lbs) may get closer to the 4.2. Can't say much about the top speed, the fastest I've been on it was 135-140 mph. Its a little hard to see the speedo going that fast. I wish I still had the bike but I had to sell it to pay for College. Bummer!

What facts? Your comments are based off of a topic you have no facts on. Do you even know what a conservative is? Try listening to Rush for a week. Or better yet, listen to the Wilkow Majority. You might learn something. I am sure you are like most people and will bash someone or something without actually having any first hand experience with it. Just following the "main stream".

Interestingly, while the Vmax is known for the 10.8 1/4 mile and Wikipedia lists the V-65 Magna as 11.2, Wikipedia still claims that Guiness gives the title to the V-65 Magna for 85-89.
ok, so I've had both. An '88 Vmax, which I sold for some dumb reason, and an 84 V-65 Magna, which I still ride. The difference between to 2 comes down to rider. There are very comparable in 1/4 mile performance. Personally, I think the Vmax wins in the looks category but the Magna wins in the scary category because you sit so much taller on it and mine feels a little squirly in high speed corners.
I think they both have power plants that exceed their frame and suspension.

ok, so I’ve had both. An ’88 Vmax, which I sold for some dumb reason, and an 84 V-65 Magna, which I still ride.

While I really like a bodily keyboard, after managing the Samsung Captivate for approximately 15 minutes, it is laborious to head back. Presently I am debating whether or not to visit Verizon for the Droid X, go to Dash for the EVO, or stick with AT&T for the Captivate...decisions, decisions.

The Motorola DROID continues to present new possibilities regular. I've had it for about 10 months and I have had a Blackberry attached to my body since September 1998. Being connected can be a important aspect of my life so I am often reachable by family and co-workers. I am a bit addicted towards Marketplace for DROID Applications. When the device had limitless memory I would check the capacity. I believe this OS would be the way of the long term and intend to develop with all of you to learn it by means of and by way of. Thanks for that content.

The VMax is truly a fast bike. But if you've ever taken one one a little ride and got on it a little, you will notice that 60 miles is about the MAX distance before needing gas. Thats even a little far... with my v65, I can go 120 miles. Thats a little more realistic for a cruiser. Check out for yourself the size of a vmax gas tank. Its a beautiful bike, but kinna impractical to ride very far.

Ike - Clearly Lewis identified herself as a libertarian and conservative in several public moments, including one in which she basically said "yep i am a Palin" girl or something like that. So to blame it on her marital problems is silly. What in the world does her views on global warming have to do with tech anyways? BTW a lot of people share the views that climate change is not real on a macro basis.

Laporte uses his venue to espouse liberal views (at least ones's he agrees with, apparently scantily clad marketing is not one of those) as he is entitled, he clearly panders to the audience of the moment. Big surprise, broadcasters pandering. I enjoy listening to him, and can filter out the silly views.
