As you also know, I’ve had a couple of false starts on launching the Geek Of The North podcast. Part of that is I was trying to do a show that isn’t my style. Much like Strange Today. That was a great podcast, but it wasn’t “me” and if I can’t just be me, then I’m not motivated to do it on a regular basis.

So, to that end, I’ve widened the scope of what I want Geek Of The North to be. It’s going to be ME talking about the tech subjects that I like to talk about in a way that I like to talk about them. Relaxed, unscripted and comfortable. Like I’m talking to you over a beer or cup of coffee. I hope you will like the new format.

I’m also going to be sticking to a strict schedule. (yeah, I’ve said that before) So, anyway… My schedule is as follows:

Monday: No Podcasts. Use this for Web work
Tuesday: Record Mike Dell’s World (main feed)
Wednesday: Other recording projects (like BanjoTrax on Ed’s Mixed Bag)
Thursday: Record Geek Of The North
Friday: Record What’s Up With That (once in a while) and/or record **the yet to be amed new show with co-host**

Unscheduled: ipadio updates and / or record Mike Dell’s World (unplugged feed) Also, record for www.flightradio.com as needed.

I want to take my podcasting to the next level of dependability.

I really appreciate that you take a slice of time out of your week to listen to me and I think it’s only fair that I make sure I’m there for that time, every time and all the time.

I had this idea that I could rope a deer, put it in a stall, feed it up
On corn for a couple of weeks, then kill it and eat it. The first step
In this adventure was getting a deer. I figured that, since they
Congregate at my cattle feeder and do not seem to have much fear of me
When we are there (a bold one will sometimes come right up and sniff at
The bags of feed while I am in the back of the truck not 4 feet away),
It should not be difficult to rope one, get up to it and toss a bag over
Its head (to calm it down) then hog tie it and transport it home.

I filled the cattle feeder then hid down at the end with my rope. The
Cattle, having seen the roping thing before, stayed well back. They were
Not having any of it. After about 20
Minutes, my deer showed up– 3 of them. I picked out a likely looking
One, stepped out from the end of the feeder, and threw my rope. The deer
Just stood there and stared at me. I wrapped the rope around my waist
And twisted the end so I would have a good hold.

The deer still just stood and stared at me, but you could tell it was
Mildly concerned about the whole rope situation. I took a step towards
It, it took a step away. I put a little tension on the rope .., and then
Received an education. The first thing that I learned is that, while a
Deer may just stand there looking at you funny while you rope it, they
Are spurred to action when you start pulling on that rope.

That deer EXPLODED. The second thing I learned is that pound for pound,
A deer is a LOT stronger than a cow or a colt. A cow or a colt in that
Weight range I could fight down with a rope and with some dignity. A
Deer — no chance.

That thing ran and bucked and twisted and pulled. There was no
Controlling it and certainly no getting close to it. As it jerked me off
My feet and started dragging me across the ground, it occurred to me
That having a deer on a rope was not nearly as good an idea as I had
Originally imagined. The only upside is that they do not have as much
Stamina as many other animals.

A brief 10 minutes later, it was tired and not nearly as quick to jerk
Me off my feet and drag me when I managed to get up. It took me a few
Minutes to realize this, since I was mostly blinded by the blood flowing
Out of the big gash in my head. At that point, I had lost my taste for
Corn-fed venison. I just wanted to get that devil creature off the end
Of that rope.

I figured if I just let it go with the rope hanging around its neck, it
Would likely die slow and painfully somewhere. At the time, there was no
Love at all between me and that deer. At that moment, I hated the thing,
And I would venture a guess that the feeling was mutual.
Despite the gash in my head and the several large knots where I had
Cleverly arrested the deer’s momentum by bracing my head against various
Large rocks as it dragged me across the ground, I could still think
Clearly enough to recognize that there was a small chance that I shared
Some tiny amount of responsibility for the situation we were in. I
Didn’t want the deer to have to suffer a slow death, so I managed to get
It lined back up in between my truck and the feeder – a little trap I
Had set before hand…kind of like a squeeze chute. I got it to back in
There and I started moving up so I could get my rope back.

Did you know that deer bite?

They do! I never in a million years would have thought that a deer would
Bite somebody, so I was very surprised when … I reached up there to
Grab that rope and the deer grabbed hold of my wrist. Now, when a deer
Bites you, it is not like being bit by a horse where they just bite you
And then let go. A deer bites you and shakes its head–almost like a pit
Bull. They bite HARD and it hurts.

The proper thing to do when a deer bites you is probably to freeze and
Draw back slowly. I tried screaming and shaking instead. My method was
Ineffective.

It seems like the deer was biting and shaking for several minutes, but
It was likely only several seconds. I, being smarter than a deer (though
You may be questioning that claim by now), tricked it. While I kept it
busy tearing the tendons out of my right arm, I reached up with my left
hand and pulled that rope loose.

That was when I got my final lesson in deer behavior for the day.

Deer will strike at you with their front feet. They rear right up on
their back feet and strike right about head and shoulder level, and
their hooves are surprisingly sharp. I learned a long time ago that,
when an animal –like a horse –strikes at you with their hooves and you
can’t get away easily, the best thing to do is try to make a loud noise
and make an aggressive move towards the animal. This will usually cause
them to back down a bit so you can escape.

This was not a horse. This was a deer, so obviously, such trickery would
not work. In the course of a millisecond, I devised a different
strategy. I screamed like a woman and tried to turn and run. The reason
I had always been told NOT to try to turn and run from a horse that paws
at you is that there is a good chance that it will hit you in the back
of the head. Deer may not be so different from horses after all, besides
being twice as strong and 3 times as evil, because the second I turned
to run, it hit me right in the back of the head and knocked me down.

Now, when a deer paws at you and knocks you down, it does not
immediately leave. I suspect it does not recognize that the danger has
passed. What they do instead is paw your back and jump up and down on
you while you are laying there crying like a little girl and covering
your head.

I finally managed to crawl under the truck and the deer went away. So
now I know why when people go deer hunting they bring a rifle with a
scope to sort of even the odds.

All these events are true so help me God…

A new podcast? Well, sort of.

In Mike Dell’s World # 145 I asked was people thought of the current format of the show. Me talking, some music and the same stuff I’ve been doing for nearly 5 years. Some people thought the music was good, some thought the music was too much.

SO, this is what I’m going to do do for “unplugged”. This is going to be the feed where I do just voice. No Music, no sound effects and unedited. Just me chatting about whatever it is that’s on my mind. These episodes will will likely be shorter and can come out multipul times a week or maybe no times a week. I’m going to try to keep Mike Dell’s World (the main podcast) as it has been more or less weekly.

“Dirty Jobs” exec producer Craig Piligian has nabbed the rights to turn the dangerous work of airplane repo man Nick Popovich into a TV series.

Popovich is the co-partner of Sage-Popovich, a repossession firm that specializes in taking back big-ticket items — mostly airplanes. According to a recent profile of Popovich by Salon.com, the company’s clients include Citibank, Transamerica and Credit Suisse, and the firm nets $600,000-$900,000 per job.

Popovich’s business is booming in this weak economy, as he travels the globe to grab Gulfstreams, Learjets and even 747s from cash-strapped owners who have defaulted on their payments.

“Every case is different,” Piligian said. “Maybe it’s a small airline in Scandinavia that bought a 747. He has to figure out how to get past airline security and grab the plane. He plans it like a military operation. Sometimes he’s in disguise. Often it gets a little hairy.”

I got up this morning at 4am to get a deal at our neighborhood gym. (so yes, I participated on a very limited basis) But.. What I saw at the Best Buy store, Walmart and a few other big box stores completely blew me away.

After I got my 1 year membership at the gym, I decided I would go drive by best buy and see just what was going on. There was a line that was at lest a half a mile long from the front doors. There were people in tents, there were people selling coffee and hot coco. (those were the smart ones)

At 4am in our little city, the traffic was like rush hour on the streets. As I drove by WalMart, and the parking lot was as full as it would be on a normal Saturday afternoon. I suppose people are just looking for an excuse to spend some money. But, really? Tents in November in Michigan? No thanks, I will stay in my nice warm bed (or in this case car) .

The antennas work great and I have HD on all the networks with no problems. The whole install job took about 1.5 hours with a good ground man (THANKS KEITH!) Keith also took the photos.

Now I can call the cable company and tell them to turn off the cable TV part of my service. I’m keeping the 10meg internet service!

Welcome to November 2009! Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit (as Chick McGee from the Bob & Tom Show says at the start of the month)

This November 1st is a strange 25 hour day. This makes up for the 23 hour day we had in spring so now the space-time continuum is in tact.

Daylight wasting time is over. I wish we would just do away with this antique concept. In fact, we should do away with time zones all together. We need to adopt UTC as the time all over the world and go to a 24 hour clock. Who cares if you go to work at 0700 or 1700 or whatever? The sun comes up at 1400 and you go to work at 1800. Whatever works. Time is just a number.

Oh well. Have a happy 25 Hour day and Look out for new podcasts coming this week!

If George W. Bush had bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia , would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had visited Austria and made reference to the non-existent “Austrian language,” would you have brushed it off as a minor slip?

If George W. Bush had filled his cabinet and circle of advisers with people who cannot seem to keep current in their income taxes, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had been so Spanish illiterate as to refer to “Cinco de Cuatro” in front of the Mexican ambassador when it was the 5th of May (Cinco de Mayo), and continued to flub it when he tried again, would you have winced in embarrassment?

If George W. Bush had mis-spelled the word “advice” would you have hammered him for it for years like Dan Quayle and potatoe as proof of what a dunce he is?

If George W. Bush had burned 9,000 gallons of jet fuel to go plant a single tree on Earth Day, would you have concluded he’s a hypocrite?

If George W. Bush’s administration had okayed Air Force One flying low over millions of people followed by a jet fighter in downtown Manhattan causing widespread panic, would you have wondered whether they actually get what happened on 9-11?

If George W. Bush had failed to send relief aid to flood victims throughout the Midwest with more people killed or made homeless than in New Orleans, would you want it made into a major ongoing political issue with claims of racism and incompetence?

If George W. Bush had created the position of 32 Czars who report directly to him, bypassing the House and Senate on much of what is happening in America, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had ordered the firing of the CEO of a major corporation, even though he had no constitutional authority to do so, would you have approved?

If George W Bush had proposed to double the national debt, which had taken more than two centuries to accumulate, in one year, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had then proposed to double the debt again within 10 years, would you have approved?

So, tell me again, what is it about Obama that makes him so brilliant and impressive?

Can’t think of anything? Don’t worry.

He’s done all this in 10 months — so you’ll have three more years to come up with an answer

I like the old theme because it is so flexable, but it has a bit of a problem with Blubrry Powerpress. Now, I would stick with it but I’m trying to simplify my blogging and podcast posting workflow and it’s so much better being able to post a podcast and not worry about extra settings to get the player to work in the post and all the other things that old theme made me do. I’m going to move that theme to another website of mine ( to be launched later ) where it will be the perfect fit. Stay tuned for that.

Met a lot of new people and hooked up with a lot of other friends from past years of the New Media Expo. One of the highlights was meeting Mike James and his wife Jeanne at the show and at the Rawvoice Party.

There were some interesting moments. Rob Blatt finished second in the Fat Burger XXX Challenge by eating a 1.5lb hamburger. Tech Podcast member Jeffery Powers also finished 2nd in his heat by eating the same size burger.

I would like to thank the Rawvoice Team for letting me be a part of such a great company and it was really great to have the whole team in the same place for once!

All in all, it’s been a great trip so far. Now for some Vegas Play Time! Kathy and I will be sticking around until Monday and then we will fly home to the Cold cold real world of Northern Michigan!

Met and re-connected with lots of friends in the podcasting and blogging world. This party will be just more of the same I’m sure.

I did “sudo apt-get remove compiz” and “sudo apt-get remove compiz-core” and it’s all fixed.. Without the fancy graphics effects.

I also un-installed Windows 7 and made Grub boot Windows Vista first instead of Ubuntu.

The high temperature at the Gaylord regional Airport on Saturday…
August 22…only reached 61 degrees. This value ties a record for
the coldest high temperature for the date…with the older record
being set back in 1923.

In addition…the high temperature at Cherry Capital Airport in
Traverse City only reached 62 degrees on Saturday…August 22. This
value also ties a record for the coldest high temperature for the
date…with the older record dating from 1926.

Global warming?

Fast forward to now. I have since signed up with Google Voice (my main voicemail line at the right hand side of the page). On top of that I have a Skype-in number and just today, I picked up a “Say Now” number (www.saynow.com) So now, there are 4 numbers for me and 2 for my wife. I guess that’s ok, and the way it’s setup, it won’t bother us if people call (other then my cell phone when I’m sleeping).

I also picked up a Skype to POTS adapter which lets me plug in a normal phone to a computer running skype. So now, I can have my cordless phone working again and use it with the Skype in or Skype out or even normal Skype calls. It’s really handy! I just got that thing installed this morning and had a chance to talk to my friend Jeff Forester (aka Trucker Two Times) while he was driving his big truck around Nashville. IT worked perfectly.
